In 1880 the British shorthair was developed from British Farm, street and household cats. By 1950 the breed had almost become non-existent thankfully to dedicated breeders the British shorthair cat had been revived. By 1970 the British shorthair cat had won its admirers and is continuing the tradition of winning hearts today. The British Shorthair cat comes in many colours however the Blue British cat is the most popular colour with many people.
The disposition of this beautiful breed is calm and independent not very needy of attention and will not fret when you leave to go to work they are capable of being left alone for a up to 6 hours by themselves however are very happy upon your return and even happier if there was another cat in the house to combat boredom. They are affectionate and will tend to want to know what you are doing around the house by following you as you go about your daily routine. This breed is all four paws to the ground as they do not like being lifted in the air and being held for too long as their thick coats acts as insulation so become overheated very easily. They would be happy with a cuddle or two when asked of them. They are good hunters when required to be which make them excellent mousers.
The size of a male British shorthair is larger than the female weighing up to 8kilograms and the female weighing up to 6 kilograms; they are classified as a medium to large breed with massive heads and broad chested. This breed takes 4 years to reach full maturity doing well at cat shows well into old age. Their coat is dense and cracks when the body is flexed. Their coat is easy to maintain as it is short, a weekly brush is all that is required .Over feeding can lead the British Shorthair cat to obesity as this breed can be fairly sedentary at times. Feeding your British a high quality diet and not offering table scraps will promote a longer happier healthier life.
